Roman memorial stele

A painstakingly reconstructed Roman stele is on view in Staudach-Egerndach on the road from Grassau to Bergen.

The stele is a reconstruction of the original memorial which once stood in the Archäologische Staatssammlung in Munich and was destroyed by bombs in the Second World War. It was made around 100 A.D. and commemorates a man named ACUTUS and his wife AMANDA. The man is depicted as a Roman with the typical hairstyle and clean shaved, while the woman is shown wearing local Celtic traditional clothing. They were emancipated slaves who nevertheless must have been wealthy enough to afford the price of a memorial stele.
